School Finance & Teacher Tenure

We are aware of educator concerns about teacher rights and the elimination of tenure. The fact is, recent KANAAE member surveys don't support the outright elimination of tenure and we did not endorse HB 2506. As a member-driven organization, KANAAE only takes positions on issues if our members are surveyed and they support a particular issue with a strong majority.

Based on member survey data, KANAAE members are split on eliminating tenure all together; however, opinions are shifting and KANAAE members do not see tenure as a necessity. An overwhelming majority of members believe that tenure is not necessary for an educator to properly perform his or her job effectively and a vast majority asserted that achieving tenure does not indicate that a teacher is, in fact, effective.

We will continue to be in touch with legislators and monitor the implementation of this new legislation to ensure that KANAAE member feedback is carefully considered. While KANAAE members are progressive in their views about tenure, we understand the confusion and fear that elimination of the tenure law can cause.

If you feel you are being unfairly targeted, or have concerns about your employment status, as a KANAAE member you have access to our legal team and should contact KANAAE immediately for legal support. In addition, please let your colleagues know the value of KANAAE membership and that state and federal laws still protect employment rights.

We encourage you to contact KANAAE with your thoughts on these upcoming changes. We are committed to our member-driven philosophy and will share your concerns with legislators and leaders on all levels.

We are proud to support you.

Warm Regards,

Garry Sigle
KANAAE Executive Director

I concur with what Dan has said above. How do you participate in the surveys? Many teachers in our area are very concerned with what has happened and want to put in some input.

I have been a part of AAE for more than ten years and yet have not seen a single survey. How do I get to be part of these surveys. Fellow teachers in my district also have not been part of these surveys. We have STRONG concerns over the new house bill. I strongly disagree with what is stated in the third paragraph. I don't believe that tenure has ever been about the effectiveness of teachers.
